Domino Harvey was an English bounty hunter, notable in that she was a woman in a predominantly male-oriented field.
Harvey was born to a wealthy family, with two well-off parents. Her father was Laurence Harvey, a popular actor on the stage and the big screen who proved good enough to earn an Academy award nomination for his work. His more notable movies included The Black Rose, The Alamo, The Manchurian Candidate and Room at the Top, for which he received the nomination. Her mother was Paulene Stone, a Vogue cover girl who was one of the top English fashion models in the 1960’s. Needless to say, Harvey came from a well-to-do background. She also had a half-sister on her mother’s side named Sophie.
According to Harvey herself she started down a road similar to her mother’s as a model, though there has been no confirmation that she actually signed up with an agency. It wasn’t long before Harvey moved into different, low-key careers: at one point in her early life she ran a nightclub in London , and after moving to the United States in her late teens she was a ranch hand in San Diego and a volunteer fire fighter.
Her turn to bounty hunting came when she noticed an ad in a newspaper by veteran hunter Ed Martinez, which she attended. Martinez soon became a mentor to Harvey . Through his training she quickly moved into the world of bounty hunting and earned a name for herself. According to reports she stayed with Martinez for three years, all of them filled with violence and excitement. She came well equipped, too, with natural survival skills and plenty of weaponry bought with family money.
She also found opportunity, probably because she was a female bounty hunter: in 1995 Harvey sold her story to director Tony Scott. The two stayed in contact for quite a few years, and in 2005 the movie Domino was released, with Keira Knightley playing Harvey . Harvey helped make the movie and appeared on set quite a few times, but she never got the chance to see it finished.
But Harvey had drug problems from an early age, problems she maintained while doing her hunting. She apparently sought help but the ease of access to drugs – often found during busts – made it difficult to stave off the addiction. By 1998 Martinez left Los Angeles , bringing an end to Harvey ’s bounty hunting days, and soon after her mother enrolled her in a long-term rehabilitation clinic in Hawaii .
In 2000 Harvey returned to Los Angeles and began taking computer classes, taking occasional design jobs and acting as a DJ on the side. Unfortunately this new life didn’t pan out, as Harvey was arrested for the intention of distributing a sizable amount of drugs. Harvey vehemently denied ever planning to do so.
Harvey died on June 27, 2005 , a few months shy of the release of Domino. She was found dead in her bathtub, having overdosed on a painkiller. It was suggested by her mother that Harvey had used the drugs to stave off an injury she’d sustained while walking her dog.
